Modem guide

Modems and routers: plain-English basics

Urban no longer sells or rents modems. This page has been reframed as a general educational guide about modems, routers, Wi-Fi, and compatibility questions.

What a modem does

A modem connects the home to the internet provider’s network. Cable, fibre, and DSL services use different equipment, so a modem that works for one service may not work for another.

What a router does

A router shares the connection with your devices and usually creates the Wi-Fi network. Some devices combine modem and router functions in one box.

Why compatibility matters

Providers often require approved equipment, firmware versions, or provisioning records. Before buying used equipment, check with the current provider.
