Start with the simplest checks
- Restart the modem/terminal and router if safe to do so.
- Test near the router and then farther away.
- Try another device.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and streaming.
- Run a speed test and record download, upload, and ping.
Common causes
Wi-Fi interference
Walls, distance, neighbours’ networks, old routers, and poor placement can make a good plan feel slow.
Upload saturation
Cloud backups or video calls can fill a small upload pipe and make everything feel laggy.
Evening congestion
Some shared-access networks or local nodes may slow during peak use.
Old device or router
A slow laptop, phone, cable, or router can cap performance long before the provider connection does.
When it may be the provider
If wired tests are consistently much lower than expected, the modem shows errors, multiple neighbours are affected, or the provider confirms an outage, contact the provider’s official support channel.
